Motorised Reels

Reliable power, data, and fluid transmission for moving equipment

Cavotec motorised reels ensure safe, continuous and controlled transfer of power, data and fluids to mobile machinery operating in the world’s toughest environments — from ports and steel mills to mines and tunnelling projects.

Built for long service life, low maintenance and precise torque control, Cavotec reels are engineered for both intermittent and continuous operations, delivering efficiency and safety across every industry.

Engineered for Performance

Tailored design

Every Cavotec reel is purpose-built to match the machine, motion, and environment it serves — from heavy duty and high-speed port cranes to space-optimised reels for underground mining equipment.

With some of the world’s largest mono drums reaching 9.2 m in diameter and level-wind drums up to 7 m wide, Cavotec reels deliver unmatched reliability, performance, and precision — even on applications operating at speeds up to 300 m/min.

Robust and compact

Cavotec reels are built to perform in the toughest environments, combining durable construction, precision drive systems and tailored engineering to ensure reliable operation under heavy loads, dust, vibration and temperature extremes.

Smart engineering

Built with Cavotec’s own T-series and hydro-dynamic gearboxes, supported by torque units and collector systems, each reel provides smooth, consistent operation and dependable energy transfer.

Cavotec offers a wide range of drive technologies, from torque-motor and magnetic coupling systems to hydraulic and VFD-based designs, to meet the diverse demands of global industries and applications.

Reel

Engineered as One System

A Cavotec motorised reel integrates motor and gearbox torque unitsdrumsslip rings/Swivelscables / hoses, and guiding & stress-relief assemblies into a fully engineered system.

Each component is carefully selected and harmonised to ensure efficient power transfer, smooth operation, and long-term reliability across Ports, mining, tunnelling, and general-industry applications.

Applications

The Cavotec product range includes cost-efficient motorised reels systems produced in high volume series and relatively small volume projects. We support customers from design to commissioning of products and systems ready for use in the harshest operating and ambient conditions.

Cavotec manufactures motorised reels for horizontal, vertical, continuous and intermittent use. We provide tailored solutions for LV or MV applications, with or without fibre optics, for various applications.

Ports and Maritime

Cavotec motorised cable reels are integrated in all potential ports crane applications, at the quay, at the yard or at the intermodal terminal.

Typical applications:

  • Ship-to-shore (STS) cranes
  • Automatic stacking cranes (ASC)
  • Rail mounted gantry (RMG) cranes
  • Electric rubber-tyred gantry (E-RTG)
  • Ship loaders
  • ShorePower systems

Mining & Tunnelling

Durable, high-performance reels for continuous-duty machinery in demanding conditions.

Typical applications include:

  • Tunnel boring machines (TBM)
  • Face drilling machines
  • Stacker-reclaimers
  • Electric rope shovels

Industry

Tailored solutions for mobile industrial applications, both indoor and outdoor.

Typical applications include:

Main Components of a Cavotec Motorised Reel

1. Motor (with Drive)
Equipped with standard squirrel cage (with/without brakes) or torque motors built according to IEC standards.

Depending on application, Cavotec also offers hydrodynamic cable reels powered by pneumatic or hydraulic motors, ensuring reliable torque and smooth control in demanding environments.

2. Gearbox / Torque Unit
Available in multiple configurations with adjustable output torque ranging from 10 to 1,200 daNm, providing the required power transmission for diverse reeling applications — from light-duty industrial reels to heavy mining and ports systems.

3. Collector Assembly

Designed for safe and efficient transmission of power and signals, with current ratings up to 2,400 A and voltages up to 30 kV. Custom-built collectors are available for higher requirements.

For hose reels, specialised swivels are engineered for air and fluid transfer up to 20 bar as standard, with customised pressure ratings available on request.

4. Drum Assembly
Constructed from modular standard elements that can be easily adjusted to the required width.

Custom-engineered drums are available for specific cable dimensions, winding patterns, or environmental conditions.
